The High Council of Health convenes in Rome: Science at the Service of the People with Professor Antonio Giordano

The newly appointed Consiglio Superiore di Sanità (High Council of Health), the highest technical-advisory body of the Italian Ministry of Health, convened today in Rome. This institution plays a crucial role in shaping the nation’s health policies, offering expert opinions on key issues related to public health, prevention, and scientific research.

Among the prominent members of the newly composed council is Professor Antonio Giordano, a world-renowned oncologist and geneticist, who has been appointed as Vice President of one of its sections.

The High Council of Health includes ex officio members as well as 30 appointed experts from various fields of medicine, surgery, and public health, selected directly by the Minister of Health.

Professor Giordano’s appointment is a clear acknowledgment of his scientific expertise and unwavering commitment to advancing public health, particularly through his advocacy for environmental justice and his research on the effects of external factors on human health.

“My commitment is to science at the service of people,” stated Professor Giordano, emphasizing his vision of a research and health policy approach that stays close to citizens.

“I will bring to this role the experience I have gained internationally, with an integrated perspective combining research, prevention, and environmental justice. I believe in a science that is close to people and capable of guiding health policy through data, expertise, and transparency.”

Professor Giordano is the founder of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO), which has long been dedicated to studying cancer mechanisms and denouncing the health impacts of environmental crime, especially in severely affected areas such as Italy’s “Land of Fires.”

His presence on the High Council of Health sends a strong message: the healthcare of the future must be increasingly scientific, equitable, and bold, bridging cutting-edge research with the real needs of communities.

With this new formation, the High Council of Health is ready to tackle the health challenges of the upcoming 2025–2028 term, with the goal of providing the Ministry of Health with authoritative guidance rooted in the most up-to-date scientific evidence.

The contribution of high-profile figures such as Professor Antonio Giordano will be crucial in translating scientific knowledge into tangible actions for the benefit of all citizens.
