Trump opens the door to talks with Xi Jinping: a glimmer of hope in the US-China trade war

US President Donald Trump has declared his willingness to reopen dialogue with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, calling him “a longtime friend.” This move comes amid rising tensions between the world’s two largest economies, with both sides imposing escalating tariffs on each other.

In recent days, the US has raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, prompting China to retaliate with increases up to 125% on American products. Despite the growing trade rift, Trump expressed optimism about the chances of reaching a new commercial agreement with Beijing.

“We’re doing very well,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt added that the president remains open to negotiations and highlighted his deal-making abilities, noting that the administration has received interest from 75 countries, with 15 trade offers already in the works.

However, Beijing has responded with firm resistance. Chinese officials have labeled Trump’s tariffs as “unilateral acts of bullying” and called on the European Union to join forces with China in opposing such tactics. President Xi Jinping emphasized that “there are no winners in a tariff war” and voiced his preference for resolving disputes through dialogue.

As tensions continue to mount, Trump has insisted that China must make the first move to resume talks, stating that his administration will not be the one to initiate contact. At the same time, he sought to calm financial markets by asserting that his tariff strategy is “working very well” and that the dollar remains “strong and formidable.”

The outlook remains uncertain, with many analysts warning that the deepening trade conflict could have serious repercussions for the global economy.
