Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, reiterated the importance of initiating sincere and unconditional dialogue to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Speaking at the “Iftar – Ramadan Table” event at the St. Regis Hotel in Rome, Parolin emphasized that Ukraine’s willingness to agree to a 30-day ceasefire presents a crucial opportunity to kickstart peace negotiations. “We hope that Russia will not impose preconditions that prevent the start of dialogue,” he said, adding that the process must aim for a just and lasting peace.

Parolin pointed out that one of the conditions set by Russia for the ceasefire is monitoring compliance, but stressed the importance of overcoming such obstacles to engage in constructive dialogue. “This process of dialogue must begin, as Ukraine is finally showing willingness,” he said, expressing hope that Moscow would show similar openness.

The cardinal also expressed concerns about Europe’s rearmament plan, warning of the risks of an arms race. “When we rearm, sooner or later, the weapons have to be used, right?” he remarked, reiterating the Holy See’s historical stance in favor of general and controlled disarmament. Parolin called on the international community to reflect on the consequences of increased military spending, emphasizing that peace cannot be built through arms.

Parolin’s remarks serve as a call to responsibility, underscoring the need to pursue peace through dialogue and disarmament. In a time of high geopolitical tension, the Vatican’s message invites the world to move beyond divisions and work toward a diplomatic solution that ensures stability and justice.
