Daylight Saving Time: When to Change the Clocks

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a well-known practice that occurs twice a year, impacting the lives of millions of people worldwide.

In 2025, the switch to DST will happen on the night of March 29-30, when clocks will be set forward by one hour.

The shift is part of an annual ritual, marking the transition into the warmer months and signaling longer days ahead. The clocks will be turned back again in the last weekend of October.

The process is straightforward: at 2:00 AM on March 30, clocks are moved forward one hour to 3:00 AM. This adjustment gives us an extra hour of daylight in the evening, helping people take advantage of longer days during the spring and summer months. The goal is to reduce the need for artificial lighting, theoretically saving energy and making better use of the natural daylight.

DST was first introduced during World War I to conserve energy by making better use of natural daylight in the evening. The idea was that by shifting the clocks forward, people would use less electricity in the evening, as the sun would still be up during peak hours. While the effectiveness of this energy-saving practice has been debated, many countries continue to observe DST, including most of Europe and North America.

For many, DST also provides the benefit of more daylight after work or school, allowing for more outdoor activities and contributing to overall well-being.

Daylight Saving Time will come to an end on the last Sunday of October, this year on October 26, 2025. At 2:00 AM, clocks will be turned back one hour, returning to Standard Time. This change marks the end of the extended daylight and prepares us for the shorter days of autumn and winter.

While the switch to Daylight Saving Time might seem like a minor inconvenience, it plays a significant role in how we structure our days and manage energy consumption. As the days get longer and warmer, many people look forward to the benefits of more daylight in the evening. So, don’t forget to set your clocks forward on March 30 and enjoy the extra hour of daylight!
