George Simion’s Challenge Reclaiming Democracy and Redefining Romania’s Future in Europe
George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), has recently emphasized the necessity of “reclaiming democracy” and has called for a “reset” of the European Union. He praised Giorgia Meloni’s example, highlighting how identity and pragmatism can lead to success in Europe, and expressed his intention to pursue a similar path for Romania.
The Romanian political landscape has been turbulent following the annulment of the December 2024 presidential elections by the Constitutional Court, citing alleged Russian interference favoring ultranationalist candidate Călin Georgescu. This decision led to widespread protests and a political crisis, culminating in the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis in February 2025.
New presidential elections are scheduled for May 4, 2025. However, the Central Election Bureau rejected Georgescu’s candidacy, citing his anti-European Union and anti-NATO positions as incompatible with presidential duties. Georgescu plans to appeal this decision to the Constitutional Court.
Meanwhile, George Simion has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections, aiming to harness nationalist sentiments and the public’s desire for change. Despite being under investigation for incitement to violence, his candidacy has been approved, though he has expressed concerns about potential exclusion similar to Georgescu’s.
Political tensions in Romania remain high, with demonstrations both supporting and opposing the current government and the Constitutional Court’s decisions. This situation underscores a deep divide within Romanian society regarding the country’s political future and its role within the European Union.
