British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has convened a virtual summit with 25 global leaders to discuss Ukraine’s security and the potential formation of an international coalition ready to enforce a ceasefire.

Among the participants were French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, Meloni made Italy’s stance clear: “No to sending troops for any missions in Kyiv.”

Starmer described the meeting as a crucial step to strengthen Ukraine’s security and maintain pressure on Moscow. “Putin will have to sit at the negotiating table sooner or later,” the British Prime Minister stated, emphasizing that the “willing” coalition is ready to support Ukraine with military and logistical means to ensure peace. The summit saw an increase in participation compared to previous meetings, signaling growing international resolve.

During the meeting, Giorgia Meloni reiterated that Italy would not participate with troops in missions on the ground in Ukraine. “There is no plan for national participation in a potential military force,” the Italian Prime Minister said, instead emphasizing Italy’s commitment to working with European partners and the United States to establish credible and effective security guarantees for Kyiv. Meloni also proposed applying NATO’s Article 5 to Ukraine without formally including the country in the Alliance.

The summit highlighted the importance of a united international front in addressing the Ukrainian crisis. While countries such as the United Kingdom and France have expressed readiness to send military contingents to secure a post-ceasefire Ukraine, others, like Italy, prefer to focus on diplomatic solutions and long-term security guarantees.

Starmer’s meeting represents a key moment in the management of the Ukrainian crisis. While the positions of various leaders reflect differing approaches, the shared goal remains ensuring lasting peace and the sovereignty of Ukraine. The international community watches closely, aware that the decisions made today will have a significant impact on the future of the region.
