European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reiterated the European Union’s willingness to maintain a constructive dialogue with the United States, while firmly emphasizing the need to protect European businesses.

“We are always open to dialogue, but we will not hesitate to defend our economic interests,” von der Leyen stated during a press conference in Brussels.

Her remarks come in response to the recent decision by the Trump administration to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Europe. In reaction, the EU has announced countermeasures worth $26 billion, targeting a wide range of U.S. products, including steel, textiles, appliances, and agricultural goods. “These tariffs are not only unjustified but also harmful to both economies,” von der Leyen added.

Despite the tensions, the Commission President underscored the importance of keeping communication channels open. “In a world full of geopolitical and economic uncertainties, it is not in our common interest to burden economies with additional tariffs,” she affirmed, urging the United States to reconsider its trade policies.

Von der Leyen’s words reflect the EU’s determination to protect its businesses and workers while seeking to avoid an escalation in the trade war with the United States.
